Seeing The Sublime
In Our Past
Using prehistoric fossils from around the world, David (the Fossil Artist) uses brushes, knives, scrapers, and even ancient artifacts to “unearth” his spiritual works of art. He has a Master’s degree in Geological Sciences and has lectured at both national and international conferences. Buying and selling fossils from all over the world, he has traveled extensively as well, amassing a large and varied collection of antiquity. His studies in earth science, spirituality, and humanity, along with clairvoyant skills, help with the creation of a form of art that bridges geologic connections to origins of spirit, life, and hope.
David typically paints on wood, embedding his fossils into the surface of the pieces throughout the process. Created through “sedimentary” layering of oil pastel, watercolor, pencil, crayon, powdered acrylic, and other mediums, the paintings are displayed in custom welded steel and wooden frames developed by the artist himself.
In an attempt to rediscover our past, David “the Fossil Artist” works with fossils and geologic artifacts to get a “feeling” of our early spiritual core and yearning for the sublime. He believes fossils are true expressions of living souls—patiently waiting to reconnect with life. Looking for God activated forces of attraction within these ancient fossils, David embodies cleanliness, composition, light, texture, and beauty in his work. Not only do we find ourselves attracted to his pieces by the quality of the painted surfaces, but by the natural forces within the rocks themselves as well. This attraction may be immediate, or it may happen slowly, but without question, these energetic paintings will ultimately enrich our understanding of ourselves.
David often works outdoors, quietly meditating as he basks in the fresh air and natural glow of the day. While meditating, he “feels” and paints the temperature, smells, pressure, odor, and geomorphologic composition of the underlying area, profoundly sensing the local environment and its mineralogy. He also has an ability to depict unknown concepts and observations while painting. Although it may take months, or even years, he eventually comes to a full understanding of the meaning behind each work of art. As interpretations of an era before man existed and the inner experiences David encounters while painting, the works are truly timeless expressions of humanity. Moreover, they are transcendent windows, allowing us to find purpose and meaning by discovering symbolic expressions of our own values and history.
